SECONDARY SCHOOL
Resources for Parents of Teenagers
Over the last few years, the Fédération des parents has worked on developing resources to meet the needs of parents of secondary school students.
The Fédération started by carrying out a “conversations” tour, during which parents of teenagers had the chance to explore, discuss, and identify their concerns.
The key points of the conversations were then collected in a document, which is available (in French only) by clicking here.
The needs expressed by parents during these conversations have motivated the development of two resources now available to them :
- A list of extracurricular activities for Francophone youth;
- A workshop on parent-teenager communication.
A List of Extracurricular Activities
for Francophone Youth
The Fédération has added to its website an online list of activities for young Francophones who attend secondary school in British Columbia. Although the list is not exhaustive, it’s a starting point for discovering multiple opportunities for young people to experience Francophone language and culture outside of class hours!
This list, which you can find on our website’s section «Parents du secondaire» shows various programs and activities grouped by category, namely: projects at the local and provincial levels; events at provincial, regional, or national levels; and other activities.
It includes a summary of each activity or program, the age targeted, as well as a link to the organizing group’s website, making it easy to learn more about activities that catch your attention. You’ll find this resource here : www.fpfcb.bc.ca/parents-du-secondaire. (Please note that the list is in French only.)
A Workshop on Parent-Teenager Communication
.During the series of “conversations”, parents had, among other things, expressed the desire to have access to workshops on communication between parents and teenagers, in order to be better equipped to maintain good relationships with their children.
Therefore, a workshop has been created based on the book “How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk” (Faber and Mazlish). It’s been offered in four communities, in partnership with the parents’ associations who wanted to organize the workshop at their school.
Participants in these workshops have emphasized that they appreciated the opportunity to reflect on their role as the parent of a teenager, to share with other parents who live with the same challenges, and to put themselves in their children’s shoes through role-playing games!
Parents’ associations that would like to offer the workshop on parent-teenager communication in their community can contact the Fédération des parents at 604-736-5056 / 1-800-905-5056, or by e-mail at info@fpfcb.bc.ca.
