EARLY CHILDHOOD

Activities For Parents and Young Children in Six Communities

« Bonjour mes amis, entrez dans la ronde, faites un petit tour et frappez fort des mains! »  (“...come join us, circle around and clap your hands!”)

This catchy song, inviting parents and children to sing and move together, begins each meeting of the "Bouts de chou francophones" play group in Rossland, in the Kootenays. Since last November, parents in this area have been invited to get together twice a month to participate in activities led by a resource person and specially designed for young children from birth to 5 years old.

This is one of the activities offered by the Fédération des parents as part of its CAFE programming, the “Centres d’appui à la famille et à l’enfance” (family and child support centres). Its goal is to provide to Francophone parents of young children the opportunity to meet other parents like themselves, to get together, to expand their parenting skills, and to have fun in French, in a stimulating environment for young and old.

Current activities are targeted, in most cases, at families living in communities that have no local Francophone association. Thus, various initiatives for the parents of young children have been started in Chilliwack, Comox, Delta, Fernie, Port Coquitlam, and Rossland.

This programming has been made possible thanks to financial support from Canadian Heritage. To find out more about the different activities, check the Fédération des parents website, www.fpfcb.bc.ca.
