40th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Overview of a Very Busy Year
At the 40th Annual General Meeting, President Suzana Straus and Executive Director Marie-Andrée Asselin reviewed the organization's achievements with respect to the important issues over the past year. The latter also presented the organization's plan for the next twelve months.
Here are some of the highlights mentioned during the meeting:
- The legal case regarding Francophone education in our province ended this year in the Supreme Court of Canada. On April 11, 2019, the Supreme Court announced that it would hear our appeal; that hearing was held on September 26 in Winnipeg. It should be noted that our case was supported by a dozen organizations from across Canada who acted as intervening parties during the hearing. We are now awaiting the decision from the highest court in the country, which could be made within six to eight months.
- The Fédération des parents undertook a number of advocacy activities with various government bodies and other agencies, both provincially and nationally.
- The Fédération continued to provide solid support to its members throughout the year. It responded to more than 100 requests for assistance from parents’ associations. These included requests for various types of information, guidance or assistance with constitution and bylaws or mandate of the parents’ association, and support with the management of preschool centres. Also, seven meetings (including workshops) took place in various regions.
- Throughout the year, we continued to collaborate with our multiple partners. We worked alongside the Conseil scolaire francophone de la C.-B. (CSF) and participated in the selection process for its new superintendent. In June, we worked closely with the CSF to launch the information campaign #MonéducationNotredroit. This campaign sought to inform and raise public awareness about access to Francophone education in our province, and also to raise awareness about our legal case across the country. Following the election, Marie-Hélène Hinse and Karine Leblanc-Sault were re-elected, respectively, as Member for the Northern BC Region and Member for the Fraser Valley Region, while Marc Paris was elected Member for the North Vancouver Island Region.
In addition, the entire Fédération des parents team warmly thanks Geneviève Deschamps and Roch Massicotte, whose terms on the board of directors ended this year.
The composition of the 2019-2020 Board of Directors is now:
- Suzana Straus, President;
- Christine Leroux, Member for the Okanagan-Columbia Region;

- Karine LeBlanc-Sault, Member for the Fraser Valley Region;
