OUT-OF-SCHOOL CARE
A Service That Appeals to Parents
Portrait of the Network of Francophone out-of-school care services
Choosing a school for your child can be a difficult decision, especially when trying to balance family life and professional activities! The availability of an out-of-school care service after class hours (and sometimes before the morning bell rings) can influence parents' ultimate decision when choosing a school.
In a dozen Conseil scolaire francophone (CSF) schools, parents have the advantage of being better able to plan their busy daily schedules, knowing they can rely on these out-of-school care services.
But what does the network of out-of-school care services in French look like in BC? The Fédération des parents recently took inventory of all out-of-school care services offered to CSF students across BC. This study collected data and interesting facts from the non-profit organizations that manage these services. In short:
• 12 out-of-school care centres are operating in the 29 CSF schools in BC, and a 13th centre has recently been made available to families whose children attend the Oak Bay Annex in Victoria;
• In total, more than 700 children are enrolled in out-of-school care centres in the network;
• More than 200 children attend their school's out-of-school care service in the morning, and at least 500 attend in the afternoons;
• More than 150 children are currently on a waiting list to get a place in a centre eventually;
• Several out-of-school care centres offer service during professional development days and Spring Break, or organize summer camps;
• 65 employees work in out-of-school care centres in BC;
• The vast majority of the centres are managed by an incorporated association of parents (school or preschool). Some Francophone federations or other non-profit organizations also manage these services.
If your community wants to set up an out-of-school care service to benefit its families, contact the Fédération des parents as soon as possible. The Fédération des parents can support you in starting and managing your service (including its growth).
The availability of an out-of-school care service established in a CSF school is definitely helpful in recruiting and retaining new families. Is there one in your community?
