Portrait of a parent
Carmen, parent volunteer, Kelowna
Behind every successful school, there are parents who get involved!
To show Parenthèse readers how parents from across the province contribute to their school community, we’re publishing “portraits” of parents who commit themselves in various ways to the community.
Carmen Perrett, president of the board, APP Les Petits Oursons and parent volunteer, école Anse-au-sable, Kelowna.
I have two children, David, 7 years old, who is going to l’école de l’Anse-au-sable, and Ian, 5 years old, who is at the prématernelle Les Petits Oursons (in l’école de l’Anse-au-sable) in Kelowna.
I have been President of the Board of the prématernelle Les Petits Oursons for two years and a Board member for four years. I also try to get involved as a volunteer in my older son’s class, and from time to time with the various activities of l’école de l’Anse-au-sable. Next year, when both of my children will be at the school, I hope to get involved with the APÉ.
My children's education is very important to me. My hope is that they will appreciate their education even more if they see me involved in their school.
A dream that I hold for my children: I hope that they are happy, in good health, and independent.
What I love the most about our Francophone school: The school and pre-school are like a community. Many parents get involved, and the teachers and staff are nice and care about children.
A proud achievement: I recently accompanied a group of teachers to Edmonton to participate in a conference on a leadership program (Leader in Me) that we want to implement at l’école de l’Anse-au-sable. I felt very fortunate to attend this conference. We visited some schools that already have this program in place, and I was surprised to see its impact on the students. I am very enthusiastic about the idea of adopting this program in our school, and I am eager to see how it will help boost the confidence of our students.
