Successful Fundraising in Fernie

For the first time last fall, parents from the Sophie-Morigeau APÉ in Fernie rolled up their sleeves to make tourtières as a fundraiser!

Despite the small size of our school, we were able to take advantage of the expertise of parents who are chefs, of parents working in the farming industry, as well as parents who had access to a "secret recipe" for the popular French Canadian traditional meat pie, their particular tourtière recipe having been refined by a group in Ontario.

With the participation of our 14 families, who all lent a hand, and the cooperation of restaurants and pizzerias in Fernie, we prepared the dough and mixture in the required quantity, and then cooked the pies.

This initiative has been a success from several points of view! It helped enhance team spirit among the school's families, the participants benefited from expert training in the preparation of dough, and together they overcame an obstacle (a flood in the room where the meat pies were prepared) to cook more than 100 pies, which were sold out in three hours!

Let's not forget the local buyers -- Anglophones, Francophones, and Francophiles -- who feasted on the finished product, the fruit of our labour. In short, the whole operation generated a profit of more than $ 1,500 for our school!
