Portrait of a Parent

Lucie, New Representative - Greater Vancouver

To show Parenthèse readers how parents from across the province contribute to their school community, we’re publishing “portraits” of parents who commit themselves in various ways to the community.

My name is Lucie Vallières and I have two children who attend l’école Anne-Hébert in East Vancouver.

I’m pleased to be part of the board of directors of the Fédération des parents, as the board member representing the Greater Vancouver Region.

Why I became involved in my school community:

I arrived in British Columbia 20 years ago, and I started to get involved as soon as I registered my children in preschool. It’s at this point that I became aware that there is a Francophone community in Vancouver and British Columbia; I wasn’t aware of it before.

I realized that my children would be able to access the Francophone public school system, and I quickly understood that the vitality of the Francophone community was based heavily on non-profit organizations, and the hard work of volunteers and parents, who over the years have fought to ensure respect for our children’s language rights -- which I find inspiring.

What I like about our school:

Our school is the heart of the Francophone community in East Vancouver. Anne-Hébert also reflects the Francophone diaspora from around the world: it's so enriching for our kids.

A dream that I hold for my children:

That they grow up Francophones, and proud of it, in a society that accepts and values diversity.
