THE LEGAL CASE

A Very Informative Presentation

During the Fédération des parents conference, counsel David Taylor gave a presentation about the legal case.

The goal of the presentation was to familiarize parents with the lawsuit by the Conseil scolaire francophone de la C.-B. (CSF), the Fédération des parents, and parents against the Government of British Columbia.

Mr. Mark Power was also present via teleconference from Ottawa.

Mr. Taylor's presentation talked about the evolution and the issues of the lawsuit. In addition, it summarized key aspects of the 1,600-page judgment rendered by Justice Loryl Russell on September 26, 2016. Mr. Taylor described the significance of the gains made by the plaintiffs, both in the communities that formed part of the claim and with regard to the Province's capital funding system.

He also described the situation in the communities which are included in the appeal brought by the CSF, the Fédération des parents, and co-appelant parents, and highlighted the significance of this appeal for the Francophone community, both in British Columbia and across Canada. At the end of the presentation, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Power answered questions asked by the participants.

We remind parents' associations who would like a presentation on the lawsuit to be organized at their school, that there's still time to express their interest in this. The Fédération des parents is willing to visit your community to discuss the lawsuit, and to answer questions from parents about the impact of the judgment and the appeal on your community. At the request of your APÉ, Marie-Andrée Asselin, the Executive Director of the Fédération des parents, Sylvain Allison, the Secretary-Treasurer of the CSF, and a member of the legal team will be happy to meet with parents in your community who want to learn more.

If your parents' association wants to receive such a presentation on the lawsuit, please contact Mikaël Lavogiez at the Fédération des parents at 604-736-5056 or 1-800-905-5056, or by e-mail at info@fpfcb.bc.ca. Please mention two or three dates that would be convenient for you when you contact us, so that we can find a date that best suits the presentation team.
