Portrait of a Parent

Marie-Hélène, New Representative - Northern BC

To show Parenthèse readers how parents from across the province contribute to their school community, we’re publishing “portraits” of parents who commit themselves in various ways to the community.

My name is Marie-Hélène Hinse and I am the mother of two children (6 and 10 years old) who attend l’école Jack-Cook, in Grades 1 and 6.

What I'm doing for my school community:

When my son started attending l’école Jack-Cook six years ago, I was involved as an accompanying parent for sports and educational or cultural outings. For the last two years, I’ve also been Vice-President of the school’s parents’ association.

Now I am pleased to be part of the board of directors of the Fédération des parents francophones, as representative for the Northern BC Region.

Why I started:

The parents’ commitment is crucial in every school... but even more so in small communities. Actively participating in school life is an effective way for me to engage in a major part of my children’s lives. I'm involved because of my interest in children’s development, and my desire to participate in the transmission of my native language and Francophone culture.

What I like about our school:

The family atmosphere that we have at our school! Everyone knows each other, and there are great interactions between the children, parents, and staff members. In Terrace, we have a community of motivated and active families!
