PORTRAIT OF A PARENT

Suzana Straus, New Representative for Greater Vancouver

I’m originally from Montreal, where I grew up in a multilingual environment. I moved to Vancouver with my family in 2002 to work as a chemistry professor at the University of BC.

I have two sons: one attends Grade 4 at l’école des Navigateurs in Richmond, and the other is in Grade 8 at l’école Jules-Verne in Vancouver. Because my husband and I speak several languages, it was very important to us that our children be educated in French, since they can easily learn English living in BC. One of the greatest riches of Canada is its diversity of cultures.

I very much enjoy being involved in the community, especially on projects that affect children. As a Francophone, I joined the school community as soon as my older son started kindergarten. I sat on the board of the APE des Navigateurs as Treasurer and I’ve been President for three years. As a scientist, I’m also very involved in doing science activities with children: most notably, I’m one of the coordinators of the CSF’s Science Expo and a volunteer with the program “Scientists and Innovators in Schools” at Science World.

As a Board member with the Fédération des parents, I especially want to contribute to the advancement of quality Francophone education in BC as well as to our community. Our children are our future and they must have every opportunity to become good citizens in a world where the emphasis is on globalization.
